The Project

Hairhaus is a unique project because it is my own business. At the time of this redesign I was also in the midst of building Rosie Keszek Creative and still relied on Hairhaus for most of my income. A few things prompted me to refresh the Hairhaus brand and website but most notably it was due to how many first-time clients were having trouble finding my location (further hindered by inaccurate Google maps directions), and I thought that I could redesign the website with a focus on visual context to help guide them. The following is a brief case study highlighting important design changes.

Brand Strategy

Logo Refresh

The original Hairhaus logo was used in marketing and signage but never made it onto the website. I had always wanted to feature it but the logo and website were created at different times and there was no easy way to integrate them.

Redesigning the website gave me the opportunity to think more about how the logo could be used. The studio is in the jewelry district in downtown Los Angeles, in a building in which most of the businesses are jewelry manufacturers, and the ground floor houses a jewelry plaza whose street level windows display an abundance of gold jewelry.

I had been experimenting with making the logo three dimensional and decided to apply a gold finish, essentially giving it the look of a jewelry charm, establishing a connection between the brand identity and its location.

Color Palette

a color swatch card of vibrant pastel gradients blue, purple, pink, orange, pale pink and white

The start of 2025 was heavy and stressful due to both regional disaster and political upheaval. I wanted to bring some lighthearted energy into my design and also signal that this business welcomes everyone. I chose a vivid pastel color palette inspired by Japanese retro style illustration and graphic design, and used this palette to create a gradient rainbow background which emulates a dusk or dawn sky.

Fonts

examples of fonts Futura Art Deco and Madimi One chosen for branding Hairhaus

Futura Art Deco has an ornate style that happens to work well with the period architecture in downtown’s historic core. I chose it initially for the line details running through the letters, which is remind me of how hair is illustrated. It has been my primary typeface for as long as Hairhaus has been around and was used for my monogram based logo.

Along the same thinking as the color palette, when choosing a new font for use in section headers I wanted something lighter and more cheerful. Madimi One’s rounded terminals and soft arches have a slightly bubbly form that gives it a buoyant feel. It is clear and easy to read making it perfect for section headers and button text.

Mobile Design

With this redesign I wanted to simplify the information architecture of the website. The previous design gave every section its own page, I wanted to reduce the total number of pages, create more flow, make things discoverable while scrolling but also quick and easy to locate directly using menu anchors.

The landing screen has the essentials: menu, logo, business name, and two calls to action –the ‘Book Now’ button which takes you to the scheduling app, and the clickable phone number beneath which is the message ‘Call or Text For Same Day Availability’.

The ‘about’ section includes social media icons linked to Hairhaus’s Yelp and Google listings, as well as other social media. This section is followed by business hours and location.

Continuing on you’ll reach the menu of services. At top of this section is another ‘Book Now’ button, both this and the button in the landing area will take the user directly to the booking app which is embedded just below the menu.

Nearing the end of the page there is a horizontal scrollable gallery containing both images and testimonials, a contact form, and the footer contains links to pages such as the FAQ –which replaces the former blog to answer questions like where to find parking and what types of payment are accepted.

Contextual Design Elements

To create a seamless connection between the business’s digital presence and its physical space, I incorporated images of the building’s exterior and main lobby. This intentional use of imagery provides immediate visual cues that ground the business in a real world location, creating familiarity for new visitors.

Front and center we have the new version of the logo in 3D gold, reinforcing association with the neighborhood in which the business resides.

Below the business name is the name of the building in which it operates.

A photograph of the building’s exterior creates the transition from the landing page to the first section of content, which includes further details about the location.

A photo detail of the salon as well as a portrait of the stylist/proprietor create more familiarity.

The photograph of the main entrance provides not only a reference to the street view –for assistance in identifying the location on approach, but also provides a view of the stunning interior with its painted ceilings, chandeliers, marble-paneled walls and floors. Just above the image is a line of text guiding the user to ‘Enter through main lobby’.
